Pionair first started in 1991 based out of Queenstown, New Zealand as a flight-seeing company, focusing on adventure tourism. In 1993 Pionair purchased its first DC3 – ZK-AMS, a meticulously restored DC3 airliner followed by a further two DC3s between 1993 and 1998. Pionair expanded into the Australian market in 1998.
Since then Pionair has grown from strength to strength, purchasing its first Convair 580 in 2003 allowing faster more comfortable travel, and expanding into the independent travel market offering tailor made luxury vacations for discerning clientele. For more than ten years Pionair has been the exclusive provider of private passenger transportation by air of Tauck World Discovery (US) passengers in Australia and New Zealand. Pionair has also provided ‘Fly in/Fly out’ contract aircraft to Thiess Sedgman JV in Queensland and Fortescue Metals Group in Western Australia in addition to numerous passenger tours on behalf of organisations as diverse as National Geographic and Stanford University as well as many independent charters for companies large and small.
Freight operations were introduced in 2007 for Toll Priority in Australia, using a converted passenger Convair 580. The success of this aircraft led to the early introduction of two dedicated Convair 580 freighter aircraft in 2008. These aircraft have since been used in many areas of operation throughout Australia, the South Pacific and South East Asia, on regular contract work as well as on ad-hoc charters, carrying loads unsuitable for all but this type of freighter aircraft. These aircraft are at present employed on regular night freight operations between Sydney and other ports on Toll’s network as required and are also available for scheduled or ad-hoc charter.
Pionair’s flight crews are all highly experienced with most of the Captains having extensive airline experience on medium or heavy jet equipment. Pionair operates its own maintenance base in Sydney, Australia, with CASA approvals to conduct all aspects of line, periodic and major maintenance on its fleet of Convair aircraft.
